SIGNS OF WAR

Seattle, being the progressive, quasi-socialist city that it is, tends to foster an air of civil disobediance (the WTO riots spring to mind). Having moved from Florida, a Republican stronghold, I noticed the political attitudes shifted considerably to the left; I had this epiphany after seeing GW’s effigy being dragged down a major thoroughfare on a Saturday night. The first photo in this series is an Orlando billboard congratulating the troops; the bulk of photos following that are of two different protests at Union Square; and the last shot is the first news report of Scooter Libby’s short-lived guilty verdict.

The images below are screen grabs from MSNBC’s web site, dating from 9-11 to the first months of the Iraq occupation. I’m posting these here as a visual post-script to the images above. All in all, a great time capsule…

UPDATE: I captured these today (December 8th) as I was taking my daughter to see Santa Claus. Little did I know, Gitmo Claus and his “reindeer” (hooded figures in orange jumpsuits, connected with tinsel and touting shopping bags) would pass by the line outside of Nordstrom’s. I followed, camera in tow, and ran into a few more interesting signs…

ALBERTSON’S: THE LARGESSE OF AMERICAN FOOD BARNS

The first time I wandered into the Winter Park Albertson’s, I was flabbergasted by the gratuitious display of excess. Compared to most countries, everything here in America is larger than life, especially the highways, the cars, the grocery stores, and the portions of food served at any given restaurant. Some of the largesse is a residual effect of the theme park mentality which pervades Orlando, and some of it is simply a reflection of America’s immense resources, particularly its untold acres of arible land. As George Carlin mentioned in one of his routines, if you combined the total acreage of every golf course in America, it would equal the size of Rhode Island.
