ADAM STRANGE…JANES, THAT IS

To attempt to explain my cousin Adam’s aesthetic might be like asking a thousand angels how to dance on the head of a pin, and so instead of waxing philosophic on his work, I’ll just plug his website: adamjanes.com. ‘Nuff said.

AMY STEIN, AGENT PROVOCATEUR

Amy is an award-winning photographer who teaches at Parsons in the Big Apple. Her work is simultaneously evocative and piquantly funny. She maintains both a professional site and a blog, which you should definitely check out. From her website:

Amy Stein is a photographer based in New York City. Her work explores our evolving isolation from community, culture, and the environment. She has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has been featured in publications such as Photo District News, ARTnews, Vanity Fair Italia, Smithsonian Magazine and The Washington Post. In 2006 she was a winner of the Saatchi Gallery/Guardian art competition for her Domesticated series.

Amy was raised in Washington, DC, and Karachi, Pakistan. She holds a BSc in Political Science from James Madison University and a MSc in Political Science from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In 2006 she received her MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

EUROPA INFARED

When I went to the 2004 Midem conference at Cannes, I opted to shoot mainly from the hip without a tripod (or in my case, without a feaux tripod…I tend to use bannisters, wine glasses, or any available props to steady my camera). While the action shots seemed to capture the elusive, if not mutable, character and colors of the French, Barcelona and London needed a more static approach. Both cities had dark textures and a more cloistered, solemn public (due in large part to the weather, I’m sure), which is why the fuzzy patina of infared seemed a logical choice.
