AMERICAN PORTRAITS

I included a subject from the last post, the Kansas karoake singer, who I believe rounds out this series perfectly. Many of these subjects are my close friends, colleagues, and confidants, several are absolute strangers…

“DOLLS” IS COMING DOWN…LAST CHANCE TO SEE IT!

POSTER

“Dolls” comes down tomorrow…a special thanks to Rob Kmiec and Adam Bresson for helping to hang it (and getting me inebriated in the process), and especially to Victor at Café Septieme for allowing me to put my art in his fantastic establishment. For those who haven’t been to this well-known café, it’s a Capitol Hill landmark with the best comfort food in town (I recommend the Septieme salad with grilled chicken). Check the SPATIA link soon for a small group of photos I took of this establishment over the course of the last two years…it’s the only place I know that’s painted crimson red from wall to ceiling!

TIMES SQUARE: THE AGGRESSIVE, VERTIGINAL THEME PARK

This series was taken in winter on two separate days and nights. Initially, I started taking action pictures of people at Times Square (as I did in Piccadilly Circus a few weeks before), but in the end, the focus became the buildings and the monolithic signage. I used to go to New York regularly when I was younger and was always a bit overwhelmed by the gritty, subversive textures of pre-Giuliani Manhattan, which I’m convinced would have made for more interesting photos…having said that, there is still something eerily alluring about this austere commercial landscape.
